ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The old residents of Hanoi were once known as "Kẻ Chợ," a term referring to people from a place where most made their living through trade. They were quick, articulate in their speech, and refined in their interactions. This painting embodies a Vietnamese proverb that roughly means, "Three women and a duck are enough to make a market." Here, however, there is none of the usual noise or bustling often associated with such a scene. The market is merely a pretext for the artist to display the forms, lines, and colors unique to the lacquer medium.
